Thank you to all the Sabaya's who attended April's read
The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf!
So
what exactly is "the beauty myth?" That was the question on everyone's
mind, which led to some great discussion on perspectives of beauty and
its impact on women's daily life. Wolf highlights that the beauty myth
has diffused within patriarchal society making her question the progress
of women's rights and strides towards equality in recent times. In her
daring book, Wolf discusses the role of beautification and beauty in the
modern age (making us all question the time we spend 'prettying'
ourselves up).
Sabayas debated whether the beauty myth
is a universal ideal and whether it can apply to all societies, such as
Arab or Middle Eastern. We shared anecdotes and events in which the
beauty myth seemed to take place in our lives, and discussed the
controversial aspects of Wolf's book.
With fresh sushi, light salads, cool drinks, and herbal tea on our table, we had- dare we say- an
enlightening discussion on the theories and practices of
The Beauty Myth.
